Flu season is here once again & we here at Doctors Express Hamilton want to make sure you are all taking the right precautions to prevent yourselves from getting the flu. During flu season about 1 in 5 people will catch the flu so this is something to be aware of. Flu season from the begging of fall ( late September) to the begging & sometimes mid-winter ( December).
I got my flu shot last year am I covered?
The best way to prevent yourself from getting the flu is to go to your local urgent care & get the flu shot. However, the flu comes back each year as a different strand of virus. It is a common misconception that you do not need to get your flu shot every year. It is true once the body becomes immune to a virus via vaccination or on it own, it can not get infected by the same virus again. This is why it is important to know that the flu comes back each year different than the year before. If you have not received your flu shot this year you are 100% vulnerable to getting the flu still.
If you have gotten your flu shot this year you are on the right track to dodging the flu this season. However, the flu shot is not 100% Effective. You can still get the flu even with the shot so it is important to also follow these steps:
Carry around hand sanitizer
If you are commuting to work every day or in public places it is important to always keep your hands clean. The flu can be transferred just like any other virus & can be hiding on bus seats, railing, bathrooms.
If you have the flu cover your mouth
If you have the flu, try your best to not spread it! If you have to cough, use the elbow method to you do not get any saliva on your hands. Avoid sharing drinks or food. Avoid shaking peoples hands & any other physical contact while you are having symtoms.
Tell others to get a flu shot
Positive peer pressure to getting a flu shot is always good for friends & family. The more we awareness given out for flu shots the better chance you will give your friends & family a chance to beat the flu!
